In May of 2007 the home that Wendy Pittman and her 3 young
sons lived in was gutted by fire. In
June of 2007 Wendy was faced with another tragedy when her fiancé, Steve Barnes
died suddenly. Wendy who works during
the day and goes to school at night was told that her home on Vance Street in
Roanoke Rapids had to be repaired or torn down by January 23, 2008. Wendy turned to Halifax/Northampton Habitat for Humanity for
help. That organization referred her to
the North Carolina Baptist Men. A group
of Baptist Men from seven different Baptist churches in Halifax and Northampton
counties got together and determined that they could tear down and rebuild
Wendy’s home. |

Following negotiations with the Roanoke Rapids City officials
to get the appropriate permits and having the asbestos removed from the home,
the bulldozer moved in and the burned out shell of the home was
torn down. |
